أشار الكاتب في هذا الكتاب إلى أنه: لو كان الجزاء الذي بإمكاني نيله مقابل المحن التي واجهتها في حياتي أن أكتب مثل هذا الكتاب، لكان هذا الجزاء عزاءً كافيًا لي، بيد أن الثمن الحقيقيّ قبضتُه مسبقًا على دفعات تحت الحساب. لقد حرّرتني الفلسفة من سطوة الأهواء الحزينة، وغرائز الانحطاط، ودوافع الموت، ومن مجمل أمراض الكينونة، من قبيل الرّعب، السأم، التذمّر، الجشع، الندم، الذنب، والحنين، وبالتالي منحتني القدرة على النمو والحياة. أشعر أنني الآن معافى بما يكفي لكي أستخلص الدروس، وها هي بعض أوراقي. وقبل البدء: أنثُر الفرح على أبواب المقابر.. تلك حرفتي.
