لم يكن يخطر في بال أن يكون مثل هذا الموضوع الحيوي والمثير في تاريخ الأدب العربي، ونعني به القصائد التي قتلت أصحابها مغفلاً، لم يتخصص به بحث أو كتاب، ولم يتطرق إليه على نحو مستقل المؤلفون والباحثون في الأدب رغم إتساعه وتوفر مادته ووضوح عناصر الإثارة والغرابة والتشويق فيه.
ولقد حاولنا أن يقتصر البحث في هذا الكتاب على العصور العربي الأربعة المعروفة - الجاهلي والإسلامي والأموي والعباسي - وبالتحديد الفترة الممتدة بين أوائل العصر الجاهلي ونهاية العصر العباسي محدداً بسقوط بغداد /656/ للهجرة، ذلك لأن الحياة الأدبية في هذه العصور واضحة المعالم وأن دور الشعر وتأثيره في الحياة العربية خلالها بارز وعميق بل ومحرك للمجتمع وفي الوقت ذاته كانت عناية الحكام والخلفاء والقادة بالشعر والبلاغة وعلم الكلام خلالها كبيرة ومتميزة مع إلتزامها الشخصي التام بكل ما يتعلق بذلك من منهج تراثي يورث بينما لم يتوفر ذلك في العصور المتأخرة بعد نهاية العصر العباسي عندما سادت الفوضى والدسائس والوفيات الغامضة، وعندما تعاقب على الحكم عدد من القادة والخلفاء الأقزام غير الأكفاء وتمزقت وحدة البلاد على أكثر من صعيد أمام النزاعات والتمردات الإقليمية بينما برز الدخول الأجنبي الغريب في مظاهر الحياة الثقافية والعامة بوضوح لينذر عن بدء مرحلة طويلة من التقهقر والإنهيار الحضاري والثقافي في حياة العرب تلك المرحلة التي بقيت متواصلة حتى بدايات القرن العشرين، وهي ما سميت فيما بعد بالفترة المظلمة.
