Book Description
The regional and international political circumstances in the Middle East were never more conductive to Arab-Israeli peace than during the mid-1990s. Israel and the Palestinians had successfully conclude the Oslo Accords, Jordan and Israel had signed a comprehensive peace treaty, significant progress had been achieved during Israeli-Syrian negotiations, the Americans were still positively involved in the peace process and, most important, Israel was still governed by its most pragmatic government to date.
However, the peace process seriously deteriorated after 1996, particularly regarding peace between the Palestinians and Israelis. This deterioration culminated in the eruption of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000, which led to the suspension of peace negotiations between the two sides. Why did the peace process fail? Can the deadlock be ascribed to changes in the external political environment? Alternatively, can the stalemate be attributed to domestic variables in Israel, such as internal politics, ideology and the personalities of leading politicians? This study demonstrates that the link between Israel’s internal political system and its foreign policy is both powerful and direct.
