معتمدة على معطيات إسرائيلية خام، من عشرات استطلاعات الرأي التي يعو جمعها لسنوات ماضية تبدأ في عام 1969 وتنتهي في عام 2001، تقوم هذه الدراسة بإجراء مسح للرأي العام اليهودي الإسرائيلي في خلال العقدين الماضيين. ينقسم الكتاب إلى أربعة أجزاء: يصف الأول التطورات الأساسية في البيئة المحيطة بتشكل الرأي العام الإسرائيلي، ويصف الثاني التغيير في ذلك الرأي العام تجاه القضية الرئيسية في عملية السلام، ويقوم الجزء الثالث بتحليل العوامل والظروف المسببة لذلك التغيير، فيما يقوم الرابع باستعراض ردة فعل الشارع الإسرائيلي على انتفاضة الأقصى. تستنج الدراسة أنه بالرغم من التحول العام تجاه اليمين في النظام السياسي الإسرائيلي، فإن الرأي العام الإسرائيلي قد تحول تدريجياً وبشكل متزايد نحو تبني مواقف معتدلة وحمائمية في العلاقة مع الطرف الفلسطيني. لكن التوجه نحو الاعتدال لم يكن ثابتاً، إذ شهد تراجعاً بين وقت وآخر. كما أنه لم يكن شاملاً، إذ بقى الرأي العام الإسرائيلي متشدداً تجاه بعض القضايا الرئيسية في عملية السلام. تقوم هذه الدراسة بشرح ديناميكية هذا الرأي العام مفسرة التوجه العام نحو الاعتدال وحالات التردد والتراجع التي شهدها.
