لا بد وأن المتتبع لمجريات الأمور في المدرسة العصرية قد لاحظ في الآونة الأخيرة إهتماماً خاصاً في موضوع القراءة وفهم المقروء؛ لقد بدأ هذا الإهتمام في العالم الغربي وخاصة في الولايات المتحدة منذ سنوات الستينات ثم انتقل إلى دول أخرى حيث يطالب المعلمون اليوم بتطوير مهارات القراءة والفهم عند المتعلم من مراحل التعليم الأولى.
ربما كان لهذه الظاهرة وهذا الإهتمام أسباب إجتماعية إقتصادية ونفسية فيزيولوجية لا مجال لتفصيلها الآن ولكن من الواضح أن مهارات فهم المقروء الضرورية لعملية التحصيل بدأت تضعف عند الطلاب بسبب إبتعادهم عن الكلمة المكتوبة، بتأثير التلفزيون والفيديو والمسجل والراديو والملصقات الملونة وإهتمامات الولد المتعددة في الحياة العصرية، لذا تَنَبَّه القائمون على التربية والتعليم إلى هذه الظاهرة، وبدأت المطالبة بإدراج هذا الموضوع كموضوع أساسي مرافق لعملية التعليم.
وقد بدأ الإهتمام واضحاً في كثير من الدول بعد نشر نتائج بعض الأبحاث والإمتحانات التي عالجت مهارات القراءة والفهم في الصفوف المختلفة والتي أشارت إلى ضعف ملموس في هذه الناحية عند المتعلم وطالبت بتأكيد هذا الموضوع في المؤسسات التعليمية؛ وقد ورد في البحث المقارن الذي أجراه روبرث ثورندايك في خمسة عشر دولة، أن الفرق في نتائج إمتحانات القراءة وفهم المقروء بين الطلاب لم يكن بسبب اللغة التي يتكلمها الطالب، بل بمستوى التحدي العقلي الذي يطرحه السؤال...
ومن هنا أصبح موضوع تطوير مهارات فهم المقروء (والمسموع) هاماً جداً في العملية التربوية، وما رجوه المؤلف من هذا الكتاب هو مساعدة المعلم والطالب والمتعلم في تحسين طريقة القراءة عندهم من أجل زيادة الفهم وزيادة مهارة السرعة في القراءة من أجل التعلم، وفي تحسين طرق التفكير عند المتعلمين لمواجهة تحديات التعليم العصرية.
