يخاطب هذا الكتاب العديد من الفئات منهم الطلاب في مراحل التعليم العام، حيث يساعد الكتاب على تنمية مهارات الفهم القرائي لدى المتعلمين، والمعلمين، حيث يقدم لهم الكتاب مجموعة من الإستراتيجيات التي يمكن من خلالها تنمية مهارات الفهم القرائي لدى طلابهم، علاوة على تقديم نموذج إجرائي لكيفية تنفيذ كل إستراتيجية من هذه الإستراتيجيات، وكيفية التحقق من توظيف الطلاب لها بشكل صحيح.
كما يساعد الموجهين أو المشرفين التربويين في توجيه المعلمين والطلاب معاً على تنفيذ إستراتيجيات الفهم القرائي عند قراءة أي مادة دراسية.
وقد تناول الكتاب ستة فصول بيانها كالتالي: تناول الفصل الأول "طبيعة الفهم القرائي"، حيث تضمن الفصل إطلالة تاريخية حول تطور المصطلح، أما عن الفصل الثاني فقد تناول "مستويات الفهم القرائي ومهاراته"، واشتمل هذا الفصل تحديد مستويات الفهم القرائي العالمية والإقليمية والمحلية، ثم التصنيفات المتعددة للفهم.
وتناول الفصل الثالث "إستراتيجية التصور الذهني"، من حيث مفهومها، والأساس العلمي لها، وعلاقتها بالقراءة عامة والفهم القرائي خاصة، وتضمن الفصل الرابع "إستراتيجية التدريس التبادلي" من حيث مفهومها، ومبررات إستخدامها، وأسسها، والأساس العلمي لها، ومبادئها، وعلاقتها بالقراءة، وإجراءاتها.
أما عن الفصل الخامس فقد تناول "إستراتيجية التعليم البنائي"، واشتمل الفصل على نبذة عن تاريخ النظرية البنائية، ومفهومها، وأسسها، وإفتراضات هذه النظرية ومفهوم إستراتيجية التعلم البنائي، والأساس العلمي لها، وتناول الفصل السادس "إستراتيجية الخرائط المعرفية"، وتتضمن هذا الفصل على تحديد أهمية الخرائط المعرفية لكل من المعلم والمتعلم، ومفهومها، وعلاقتها بالقراءة، ثم الفروق الواضحة بين إستراتيجية الخرائط المعرفية والخرائط الذهنية، وأساسها العلمي، والمبادئ الأساسية لهذه الإستراتيجية، ومراحل بنائها، وأنواعها، وأورد المؤلف ثلاثة عشر نوعاً من هذه الخرائط، ثم تحديد دور الطالب فيها، ودور المعلم، وأخيراً نموذج تطبيقي لكل منها.
