عبر العقود الماضية الأخيرة، ارتفع شعوراً عميقاً بالأزمات التي حدثت للزراعة الأفريقية. ففي نشرة الساحل في أواسط السبعينيات وبشكل مؤقت، هولت مأزق المزارع الأفريقي ولكن هؤلاء المتابعين لوضع أفريقيا مقتنعين بأن المشكلة أعمق كثيراً من تقلبات المناخ وقد وضعوا أرقاماً نشرت من قبل منظمة الغذاء والزراعة الأممية والتي اقترحت من أجل حصة الفرد من الغذاء المنتج في أفريقي وكان ذلك سابقاً للنشرة، وأكدوا على الرغم من عود الأمطار فإن إنتاجية الطعام لم تشفى (منظمة الفاو، 1978 ص77-78) ولاحظوا أيضاً، أن شعوب القارة على اتساعها معظمهم مزارعين وتزداد حصتهم من جروح وآلام النقد الأجنبي المنفق على واردات الطعام. ومن الواضح أيضاً أن صادرات الزراعة الأفريقية تتناقص، زيت النخيل من نيجيريا، الفول السوداني من السنغال، القطن من أوغندا، والكاكاو من غانا الذي كان من الصناعات المزدهرة في أفريقيا. ولكن في السنوات الأخيرة، أصبح إنتاج هذه المحاصيل أقل وكذلك تصديرها اقل ودخلها أقل من الأسواق الأجنبية. وما ينطبق على هذه الحالات كذلك هو الحال في أماكن أخرى
