هذا الكتاب، ليس تأريخاً للعلويين بأي شكل من الأشكال؛ إذ لا يلتزم مؤلفه - حسان القالش - بمنهج التأريخ، عدا أنّه لا يسعى إلى ذلك، فمن بين ما يسعى إليه هذا الكتاب، في المقام الأول، هو البحث في نشأة الوعي السياسي عند العلويين خلال الفترة (1822- 1949) وبنواحيه المختلفة السياسية والثقافية والإجتماعية، والسير نحو التحرر من الهوية الجماعية، على المستوى الطائفة أو العشيرة، بما فيها من تبعية وإنغلاق، إلى مستوى المجتمع الواسع والمتنوع إثنياً وطائفياً ودينياً، والإنخراط في شكل آخر من أشكال النشاط المدني والسياسي.
ما يريد أن يقوله الكاتب "الدفاع عن فكرة ترى بأن جماعة العلويين، التي تصنف ضمن جماعات الأقليّات المشرقية، لم تتمكن صفتها هذه أو واقعها من جعلها جماعة موحدة ومنسجمة طيلة الوقت، بحيث أدت إنقساماتها إلى تشتت قواها بين فرقاء متخاصمين ومختلفي التوجهات، الأمر الذي أخرّ إنتقالها من هامش الحياة السياسية، ولئن كان ذلك يعود، في معظمه، إلى أسباب داخلية تتعلق بطبيعة تلك الإنقسامات وتأثير توزع الجماعة الجغرافي، بين الشمال والجنوب وبين الساحل والجبل...".
وبناءً على ما تقدم، يأتي هذا الكتاب ضمن المجال العام للتاريخ السوري، بمعنى أنه يضع الأحداث والتطورات التي أسهمت بتشكيل الوعي السياسي عند العلويين في سياق حركة مستمرة، كما يسعى الكتاب إلى تقديم رؤية مختلفة متقدمة بخصوص موقع العلويين داخل البلاد ضمن الفترة المدروسة.
