من المعلوم أن الفن الروائي العربي ظل يحبو خلف نظيره الغربي عقوداً طويلة حتى أربعينات هذا القرن عندما استطاع نجيب محفوظ ويوسف إدريس ويوسف السباعي وغيرهم وضع أولى لبنات الرواية الحديثة وشهدت خمسينات وستينات هذا القرن نقلة نوعية واضحة في الرواية العربية جعلتها تحاول أن تستقل بكيانها عن نظيرتها الغربية لتضع لها هوية تميزها. ويعد الروائي الفلسطيني إميل حبيـبي أحد أهم الروائيين العرب الذين حاولوا خلق شكل فني يميز الرواية العربية من غيرها، مما جعل لأعماله الروائية سمة خاصة تختلف عن سواها، الأمر الذي حفزنا لدراسة أعمال هذا الروائي العربي، لم تتناول دراسة أعماله الروائية على نحو مستقل فضلاً عن اقتصار أكثر الدراسات النقدية التي تناولت هذه الاعمال على النقد الأيديولوجي، وعلى دراسة فلسفة الشخصيات الروائية فيما يخص القضية الفلسطينية، وهذا ما جعل الدراسات تبتعد عن جوهر الفن الروائي عند إميل حبيـبي.
نصب دراستنا هذه على قوانين الفن الروائي عند حبيـبي، مع تشديد القول على إن هذه القوانين أنما أستنبطناها من لغة النص الروائي نفسها وليس من خارجها كما يجري الأمر في النقد المضموني أو الأيديولوجي وتبعاً لهذه النظرة حاولتنا الإفادة من المدارس النقدية التي تدرس النص الروائي من الداخل كحركة الشكلانيين الروس والمدرسة الانكلو أمريكية والمدرسة الفرنسية - كما مر ذكرها أعلاه - من دون التقيد بمدرسة واحدة، إلا إن رائدنا في اختيار المنهج ظل واحداً في فصول الدراسة كافة وهو دراسة البناء الفني في روايات حبيبـي دراسة نصية والابتعاد عن النقد التفسيري والمضموني ما استطعنا إلى ذلك سبيلا.
