تدور الأحداث على جزيرة معزولة تُسمى ( افروديت ) يُمارس فيها صفقات تجارية سرية تخدم كبار الدول، بينما يعتقد الشعوب أنها جزيرة مهجورة.
يلاقي بحارة هذه الجزيرة كارثة ضخمة أثناء إحدى رحلاتهم البحرية فيخسرون بضاعتهم كاملة تمامًا ويُقتل غالبيتهم العظمى.
تناقش الرواية في طيات السحر والفانتازيا التي تزينها كيف كان الإنسان ليعيش لو وجد على أرض واحدة مع الزواحف الضخمة كالتيروصور
كما تستعرض الملوك الديكتاتورين، والجانب المظلم من القادة والحكم وفوضى الشعوب.
