بدأنا مشروع نشر هذا الكتاب الصغير بسبب الإستفسارات المتزايدة بسرعة حول العالم من الأعضاء، ومن غير الأعضاء في "أورويل سوسيتي"، كانت أغلب التساؤلات تتركز على تحديد إذا ما كان كل إقتباس يعود لأورويل (أم لا)، وتطلب تقديم اسم القصيدة وموقعها.
كانت هذه الطلبات تعني قضاء ساعات عديدة في البحث في المجلدات العشرين التي يتكون منها كتاب "جورج اورويل: الأعمال الكاملة"، جمعها وحررها البروفيسور بيتر دافيسون (بالتعاون مع إيان أنجوس وشيلا دافيسون)، لإكتشاف فقط أين يمكن العثور على السطر الذي يسأل عنه السائل.
يمكن في حالات أخرى تحديد موقع السطر بنجاح، ومن ثم تحديد القصيدة وإرسالها إلى الشخص الذي طلب التوضيح.
هذا النوع من التحقيق مرحب به دوماً، ولكنه مكلف للغاية من حيث الوقت، لذلك ظهرت الحاجة تدريجياً إلى وجود كتاب مرجعي يضم كل شعر أورويل، وليس الأشعار الشهيرة فقط، لتمكين القراء من البحث في أعماله الشعرية بأكملها والعثور على الإقتباس بأنفسهم.
يقع بعض اللوم على إهمال شعر أورويل بطبيعة الحال على الرجل نفسه، لأنه لا بد من الإعتراف بأن هناك بعض المواد المتفاوتة في الجودة بين دفتي هذا الكتاب.
ولكن لا بد لنا أن نعد القارئ أنه ربما تغضبه بعض الأبيات في بعض الأحيان، ولكنه سيصادف فجأة بيتاً أو سطراً يخلب جماله أو تأثيره أو الإختيار المثالي للكلمات الألباب ببساطة.
يميل الشعر عادة إلى إحداث هذا التأثير في القارئ، لأنه يكتب إنطلاقاً من العاطفة البحتة المجردة التي تضمن له تلك الفجوة العميقة والمتسعة بينه وبين الكلمات العادية المكتوبة.
الحقيقة أن جورج أورويل ألّف هذه القصائد ولهذا ينبغي أن تكون متاحة، أعتقد أن كتاب "جورج أورويل: الأعمال الشعرية الكاملة" يوفر مصدراً ومرجعاً مفيداً للأكاديميين والمكتبات والطلاب وقراء الشعر عموماً.
