مسرحية ترويض الشرسة من أكثر مسرحيات شكسبير رواجاً على المسرح إلى يومنا هذا، وما ذاك إلا لأن موضوعها من الموضوعات الحية منذ قديم الزمان، ونماذج الشخصيات فيها نماذج طبيعية لا يبليها الزمن ولا تتقيد بمكان دون غيره، فالمرأة الشرسة والزوج المروض لها باللين والقسوة، بالحيلة والقوة، صورة خلدها الأدب الشعبي والقصص الديني على السواء منذ أقدم العصور.
ولد "وليم شكسبير" ببلدة "ستراتفورد أبون أفين" في جنوب مقاطعة واريكشير في إنجلترا ربيع عام 1564م، وبحلول صيف علم 1598 كان "شكسبير" قد أصبح أعظم كتاب المسرح الإنجليزي قاطبة، وهذه هي الفترة نفسها التي كتب فيها رائعته الخالدة "هاملت" وقد توفي "شكسبير" في 23 من إبريل عام 1616م، ودفن في مذبح كنيسة "ستراتفورد أبون أفين" وتم تشييد نصب تذكاري له بالحائط الشمالي.
سهير القلماوي(1911-1997)، التلميذة النجيبة لعميد الأدب العربي طه حسين، وأستاذة الأدب التي أشرفت على تربية أجيال متعاقبة من أساتذة الأدب على امتداد الوطن العربي، لها ترجمات عديدة من بينها الترجمة التي نقدمها في هذا الكتاب لمسرحية من أكثر مسرحيات شكسبير شعبية.
