لقد شغل موضوع الاغتيال السياسي تفكير الكثير من الباحثين والمفكرين على مر العصور، وفي كافة النواحي، حيث كتب عنه علماء النفس والاجتماع والسياسة والدين، واختلف في تعريفه وتسميته ونظرياته الكثير من البشر، فهناك من أخذ تفسير الدوافع، وهناك من أخذ أدوات الاغتيال السياسي بدءًا باستخدام اليدين والخناجر والسكاكين وصولًا إلى عمليات التفجير والقتل بالرصاص أو بالسيارات المفخخة.. ولكن التعريف اللغوي الدقيق لعمليات الاغتيال السياسي نجده يستعمل عملية قتل منظمة ومتعمدة تستهدف شخصية مهمة ذات تأثير فكري أو سياسي أو عسكري أو قيادي للتخلص منها بتصفيتها، ويكون مرتكز عملية الاغتيال عادة منطلقًا من أسباب عقائدية أو سياسية أو انتقامية شخصًا معينًا يعتبره منفذو عملية الاغتيال عائقًا في طريق انتشار أوسع لأفكارهم أو أهدافهم.
وفي واقع الأمر فإن حجم الجهة المنظمة لعملية الاغتيال يتراوح ما بين شخص واحد فقط إلى مؤسسات عملاقة وحكومات و"دول" وهذه أخطر أنواع الاغتيالات التي تنفذها من خلال أجهزة استخباراتها وعملائها، وفي هذا الكتاب سوف نتتبع آثار خطوات تلك الجرائم وأشهرها على صفحات التاريخ وذلك منذ عهد الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام إلى يومنا هذا.
