كل الحضارات القديمة كانت تبحث عن تفسير للخلق والخليقة وبما أن عقلهم كان بدائياً فإنهم كانوا يؤلون الأمور إلى أشياء لا منطقية ترضي نفوسهم، تماماً مثلما نحن الآن عندما نعجز عن تفسير الكثير من الأمور ننسبها إلى أشياء وهمية.
وبسبب هذا صارت الأساطير حكايات مقدسة لشعب أو قبيلة بدائية وتراثاً متوراثا. والأساطير لها صلة بالإيمان والعقائد الدينية لدى هذه الشعوب البدائية. كما تعبر عن واقع ثقافي لمعتقداتهم عن الموت والحياة. وهذه نظرة ميتافيزيقية، أي المسائل التي لا يمكن تصنيفها ضمن الإطار الطبيعي.
أيضاً نرى الأساطير تروي ملاحم الشعوب وروايات عن أجدادها وحروبهم وانتصاراتهم.
على هذا الأساس لا تعتبر الأساطير تاريخاً يعتمد عليه لأنها مرويات خرافية خيالية. فالإنسان البدائي لم يكن يشغل عقله لتفسير الظواهر الطبيعية وكان يعتبر من منظوره الشمس والقمر والرياح والبحر ولنهر بشر مثله. لهذا ظهرت أساطير الأولين لدى البابليين والفراعنة والرومان والإغريق والمايا.
والأسطورة هي نتاج التفسير الساذج للشعوب البدائية لظواهر الطبيعة المختلفة التي كانت تصادفهم في حياتهم اليومية، بحيث كانوا يضعون لكل ظاهرة بل ولكل نشاط يقومون به إلاها خاصاً، وكانوا ينسجون حوله قصصاً خيالية خارقة، وقد تكون الأسطور في هيئة حكاية خرافية للعظة.
وفي كل الأحوال تظل الأسطورة مجمولة المؤلف، فهي حكاية اجتمع الشعوب على كذلك وجودها والإيمان بحقيقتها، وتظل الأجيال تتناقلها لما فيها من معنى فلسفي وسيرة لفكر شعب وإيمانه وثقافته.
