يتناول هذا الكتاب عدد من القضايا ويجمعها خيط واحد هو محاولة تقدير آفاق مستقبل الاشتراكية بوجه خاص، ومستقبل التطور الذاتي للمجتمعات المعاصرة بوجه عام. ويجري البحث في ضوء فهم محدد لعاملين أساسيين: العامل الأول: هو أزمة الحركة العمالية والاشتراكية العالمية، وهي أزمة عامة لا تتمثل في إجهاض الثورات الاشتراكية المحققة سابقاً فحسب، بل وأيضاً في انحسار مد الثورة الاشتراكة العالمية ابتداءً بالدول الرأسمالية المتقدمة اقتصادياً منذ صعود الفاشية في إيطاليا والنازية في ألمانيا في فترة ما بين الحربين العالميتين، وانتهاءً بدول الرأسمالية المتخلفة اقتصادياً في الربع الأخير من القرن العشرين.
أما العامل الثاني فهو التغيرات في شروط الصراع الطبقي بين قوى العمل ورأس المال، وفي شروط التوسع العالمي لرأسمالية المراكز كنتاج لانهيار الإمبريالية القديمة، وظهور الثورة العلمية والتقنية في فترة ما بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية ثم ركود الاقتصاد الرأسمالي العالمي خلال العقود الثلاثة الأخيرة.
