عندما تُذكر برشلونة أول ما يتبادر إلى ذهن العربي اليوم هو فريقها الرياضي ذو الشهرة العالمية، ولكن هذا الكتاب بعيد عن هذه الفكرة، فهو يتناول مدينة برشلونة بثوبها الإسلامي، ثم صراعها في ظل النصرانية مع المسلمين لقرون عدة.
عندما دخل المسلمون شبه الجزيرة الأيبيرية، كانت المناطق المشالية الشرقية منها واحدة من أهم أهدافهم، وقد تم افتتاح مدينة برشلونة في سنة 94 هـ / 712 م، بعدما تحولت إلى قاعدة للجيوش الإسلامية التي انساحت في بلاد الغال، واستمرت تحت الحكم الإسلامي حوالي تسعين عاماً ليتمكن الناصرى بعدئذ من استعادتها، وهي أول الثغور الأندلسية التي سقطت بيد النصارى وذلك سنة 185 هـ / 801 م، وبعد هذا التاريخ تحولت المدينة إلى ساحة للصراع بين الطرفين الإسلامي والنصراني استمر لأكثر من ثلاثة قرون، كما تحولت المدينة إلى نواة لإمارة أخذت تتوسع تدريجياً فضمت مناطق عديدة من الثغر الأعلى والشرق الأندلسي، ودخلت في صراع طويل مع المسلمين انتهت بإسهامها في طرد المسلمين من الأندلس.
