تعد دراسة المدن وما يدور فيها من نشاطات سياسية واقتصادية واجتماعية وعمرانية وفكرية مهمة لما تسهم فيه من تسليط الضوء إلى دقائق الأمور ورصد حركة التطور الحضاري في تلك المدن، وهو ما تعجز عنه الدراسات العامة والشاملة للإقليم أو البلد بكامله.
حكم المسلمون الأندلس للمدة بين 897 - 92 هـ / 1492 - 711 م، فأقاموا هناك حضارة شامخة تركت بصماتها في التاريخ بحيث يصعب على كل دارس تجاهلها، وكان من أهم مظاهر تلك الحضارة هي ازدهار المدن في ظل الحكم الإسلامي، إذ شجع الحكام والأمراء المسلمون هناك وعلى مختلف حقب التاريخ الأندلسي على بناء المدن وتوسيعها وإعمار القديم منها حتى عجّت بالحياة في مختلف جوابها السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والعمرانية، ومن هذا المنطلق جاءت دراستنا للمدن الأندلسية لما تمثله كل مدينة هناك من أنموذج مصغر للتاريخ الأندلسي بكل مراحله وما يحمله من ازدهار وانحطاط ووحدة وتمزق، فضلاً عمّا تتميز به هذه المدن من خصوصية طبيعية واجتماعية جعلها تتمتع بكثير من الاستقلال الذاتي ولا سيما تلك التي قامت فيها دويلات وأسر حاكمة مثل لاردة وسرقسطة وغيرها، والذي يتصفح التاريخ الأندلسي يجد عشرات الأسر والدويلات كانت أشبه بدويلات المدن منها إلى الدول الكبيرة، وهذا الكتاب هو سلسلة من دراسات في تاريخ المدن الأندلسية.
