يعالج هذا الكتاب ثلاث بنى نظرية رئيسية للتغير الاقتصادي طرحها الفكر الاقتصادي خلال مراحل مختلفة من تطوره، اندمجت بالنظرية الاقتصادية العامة بقوة واعتبرت ركناً من أركانها، والقاسم المشترك بين البنى الثلاث التي يتناولها الكتاب هي أنها بنى ليبرالية أولاً، وأنها بنى أفرزتها مراكز النظام الرأسمالي العالمي خلال مراحل تاريخية من تطورها ثانياً، كما أن تلك المراكز كانت وما زالت تسعى لتعميم هذه البنى على باقي المنظومة الاقتصادية العالمية بهدف تعميم النماذج المرجعية للتغير على العالم.
والبنى الليبرالية للتغير التي سيعالجها هذا الكتاب هي بنية السوق، وبنية المنهج النقدي، وبنية اقتصاد العرض، وعلى الرغم من ظهور تلك البنى/ المرجعيات الفكرية في مراحل زمنية مختلفة ومتمايزة عن بعضها البعض، الا انها عادت وتداخلت معاً واستفادت كل منها من الأخرى لتشكل صرحاً ليبرالياً متماسكاً للتغير الاقتصادي بواسطة تلك البنى، علماً أن تلك البنى، منذ ظهورها وحتى الآن، تتعرض بشكل مستمر لمراجعة فكرية نقدية من مدراس اقتصادية متعددة عارضت أولاً طريقة التفكير النظرية المبنية عليها، وعارضت ثانياً النتائج التطبيقية لها في الكثير من المجتمعات.
