تمثل فصول هذا الكتاب أعمال المؤتمر السنوي الثاني والعشرين الذي عقد في يومي 30و31 ديسمبر 2008 بعنوان "التطورات المعاصرة لدور مصر الإقليمي"، وقد شارك في هذا العمل كوكبة متميزة من الباحثين في محاولة لإلقاء الضوء على التطورات المعاصرة لدور مصر الإقليمي، سواء من الناحية النظرية التي تستاهل سبر أغوار مفهوم الدور الإقليمي وأبعاده المختلفة والعوامل الحاكمة له والدوائر المختلفة لهذا الدور، أو من الناحية التطبيقية كتناول دور مصر الإقليمي في العالم العربي، وكذا في البحر المتوسط، بالإضافة إلى تناول الأدوار الأخرى التي قد تنافس الدور المصري بشكل أو باخر كالدور التركي والدور الإيراني، فضلاً عن تناول البعد الاقتصادي والثقافي لدور مصر الإقليمي.
وإجمالاً، فإن هذا الكتاب يؤكد على أن مفهوم الدور الإقليمي لمصر يمتد - موقعها الجغرافي الفريد - ليشمل دوائر جغرافية عديدة تشمل الدائرة العربية، الدائرة الشرق أوسطية، الدائرة الإسلامية، الدائرة الأفريقية، والدائرة الأورومتوسطة.
