يبقى الجدال حول الدين والعلمانية، أو الإسلام والعلمانية بالتحديد، من المحاور الكلاسيكية الثابتة في الفكر العربي منذ عصر النهضة الحديثة إلى اليوم.
ويشهد الفكر الأيديولوجي العربي الراهن عودة قوية إلى هذا الجدال بعد الحراك الثوري والسياسي والإجتماعي الذي شهده بعض البلدان العربية، ولا يزال، خلال العشرية الثانية من القرن الحادي والعشرين، وبعد تجارب الإنتقال الديمقراطي ودور الإسلاميين في مصر وليبيا وتونس والمغرب، وفي بلدان عربية أخرى مثل سورية والعراق واليمن ولبنان.
يشتغل هذا الكتاب على فرضية أن كتاب عزمي بشارة، الدين والعلمانية في سياق تاريخي، هو إضافة نوعية على المسوتيين المعرفي والنظري إلى ما هو سائد في السياق الفكري والأيديولوجي العربي المعاصر والراهن من فهم نظري العلمانية، ومن تمثّل تاريخي لظواهرها.
ويحاول الإستدلال على صحة هذه الفرضية بتحديد الوجوه المتعيّنة للإضافات المعرفية والنظرية التي يحويها كتاب بشارة، نم حي هو جهد يتتبع ظواهر التديّن والتّعلمّن على مدار قرون عديدة وفي سياقات عديدة من التاريخ الغربي الحديث والمعاصر والراهن، للوصول إلى الفهم التاريخي لظاهرتّي الدين والعلمانية.
