المتعقب للتراث العربي الإسلامي، ليتفاجأ بذلك الكم الهائل من المخطوطات العربية الإسلامية، المخزنة في المكتبات الأوروبية، ولعل المكتبة الوطنية التشيكية هي من الأقل حظاً في حصولها على كنوز التراث العربي، فهي تضم ما يقارب مئتي مخطوط عربي، ما بين رسالة ومجلد ضخم، وقد حصلت عليها في العشرينيات والثلاثينيات من القرن العشرين، عندما كان (بافل يوسف سافاريك) مديراً على المكتبة.
ولم تقم المكتبة بفهرسة هذه المخطوطات أو الإعلان عنها حتى سنة 1990م، حيث صنعت فهرساً وصفياً للمجموعة العربية، وبقي مدفوناً فيها إلى جانب المخطوطات، مما جعله مجهولاً للباحثين.
إلى أن قامت في بداية القرن الواحد والعشرين بتصميم موقع على الإنترنت يعرض أسماء تلك المخطوطات وأسماء مؤلفيها وتاريخ النسخ وسنته (إن وجدت)، وعدد أوراقها وقياسها، وصوراً ميكروفيلمية لبعض المخطوطات.
إلا أن كل ذلك كان باللغة الإنكليزية -في أغلب الأحيان- حتى اسم المؤلف وعنوان الكتاب، ولم يخل ذلك من الكثير من الخطأ والخلط والوهم، مما جعل الاستفادة منه أمراً عسيراً، على الرغم من أهميته.
وخرصاً من "محمد عايش" على اتحاف المكتبة العربية بما ييسر للباحثين والمحققين عملهم، بدأ بالعمل على تحويل ذلك الموقع إلى كتاب، يفهرس محتويات تلك المكتبة، بعيداً عن الخطأ والتحريف، ولذلك، قام بضبط أسماء المؤلفات وأسماء مؤلفيها، وخرج ما أمكن تخريجه من المراجع وفهارس المخطوطات، ثم صنع فهرساً تفصيلياً للمؤلفين والكتب والموضوعات.
