يضم هذا السفر المخطوطات العربية الموجودة في المكتبة الوطنية الباريسية في موضوعات الأدب واللغة وما إليهما وقد اعتمد في وضعه على فحص المخطوطات، والرجوع إلى فهارس المكتبة المذكورة، وبخاصة الفهرس الذي وضعه (جورج فاجه. ولئن كانت تلك الفهارس قد اعتمدت في تنظيمها على الحروف الإفرنجية، فإن هذا الفهرس يعتمد التنظيم الألفبائي العربي، إلا ما كان من مادة (قصة، أو قصيدة) فقد أبقيت على حالها، تيسيراً على القارئ العربي المعني بالتراث.
وقد التزم بذكر عنوان المخطوط واسم مؤلفه، كما واعتنى بذكر رقم المخطوط، تسهيلاً لسبل الاتصال به والحصول عليه. هذا إلى جانب موضوعه واختير من الموضوعات تلك التي تمثل أهمية أكبر لدى المعاصرين من القارئين والدارسين كالشعر، النثر (ويعني كتب الأدب العام وما غلب عليه النثر كأغاني أبي الفرج، وعمدة ابن رشيق وما إليهما)، النحو والصرف، واللغة، البلاغة، العروض، الإنشاء، الحكايات.
