حياة النهضة الإسلامية تجلَّت في إدارة الدول العربية، وما عَرَضَ لها من تطوُّرات، فكانت الدولةُ في عهد الخلفاء الراشدين أفضلَ إدارةٍ وأجلَّ حكومةٍ عُرفت، ويَهُمُّنا أن نَعرِف إدارةَ الدول التالية لها، ودرجةَ أخْذِها بنَصِيبٍ من هذه الإدارة الفاضلة، وما قامت به من مَثَل أعلى في الحالات التطبيقية، فكان الإنكشافُ في دولة بني العباس أكبرَ، ونُضْحُ الفِكْرَة أعمُّ وأشملُ، ساعد على ذلك ذُيُوعُ الثقافة وسَيرُها نحو الكمال، ومن ثَمَّ شعرنا بالحاجة إلى المعرفة، وصِرْنا نتطلَّع إلى الأغراض واضحةً، لا تشوبُها شابة.
ظهرت مُخَلَّداتٌ في الحركات الفكرية، وفي التيَّارات السياسية، وفي تَجَلِّي رغبةِ الأمة وإرادتِها، إلا أن المعلومات لم تتهيأ لنا بالوجه المطلوب من الوضوح، وإن التأريخ لم يُمِطِ اللِّثامَ عما يُراد بحيث لا يدعُ رَيْباً لمُرتاب، بل لا يزال الغُموض يسود تاريخَ بني العباس خاصةً من نواح كثيرة.
وقد عثرنا على جُمْلَةٍ صالحةٍ من المؤلفات التاريخية في أخبار الدولة العباسية، ومن جملتها هذا الكتاب الذي نقدِّمُه بين أيدي القُرَّاء، فقد رَكَنَ مؤلِّفُه إلى مُدَوَّنات عديدة لا يزال بعضها في زوايا الإهمال، وهو أيضاً يُعَيِّنُ نَفْسِيَّةً خاصَّةً في نهجها، فحاجتُنا إليه وإلى أمثاله شديدة، نريد أن نسمع كلَّ ما قيل؛ لينكشف لنا التاريخ في صفحاته المختلفة والمتعارضة.
