"الأصولية المسيحية والصحوة الإسلامية" عنوان مثير للجدل في زمن تعودنا فيه على سماع وقراءة مصطلحات مثل "الأصولية الإسلامية" ، "الحركات الأصولية" ، "والتي أصبحت من أكثر المصطلحات انتشاراً في عالم اليوم.
ووسط هذا الجدل الذي يحتدم في الأوساط الفكرية والسياسية حول هوية الإسلام، وما يتعرض له الإسلام باسم الحرب على الإرهاب، انبرى مؤلف الكتاب الأستاذ يوسف العاصي الطويل لكشف الحقيقة التي تحاول وسائل الإعلام الغربية تزيينها وإخفائها، وهي "أن أصل مصطلح الأصولية Fundamentalism أطلق في الأساس على الحركات المسيحية التي انشقت عن الكنيسة الكاثوليكية نتيجة لحركة الإصلاح الديني في القرن السادس عشر، حيث أقامت هذه الحركات دعوتها الإصلاحية على أساس الدعوة إلى العودة إلى أصول العقيدة المسيحية النقية، وهو الكتاب المقدس ...". أما بالنسبة إلى مصطلح أصولي أو أصوليين بمعناه الإسلامي، وكما استخدم في الكتابات الإسلامية القديمة والحديثة، فهو برأي المؤلف "يختلف كل الإختلاف عن معناه المستخدم الآن في بعض الكتابات ووسائل الإعلام المختلفة، والتي أضفت على المصطلح صفات الإرهاب والتخلف والعنف والرجعية لأهداف خاصة". من هنا يحاول مؤلف الكتاب توضيح العلاقة بين الأصولية المسيحية والصحوة الإسلامية، وأسباب اهتمام الغرب وأميركا بالصحفة الإسلامية وموقفهم منها، وهدفهم من وصم الصحوة الإسلامية بالصولية، وموقف علماء المسلمين من هذا المصطلح، وما اقترحوه من مصطلحات بديلة له ... وقضايا أخرى الهدف من طرحها إلقاء الضوء على جذور الحرب على الإسلام منذ ظهوره وحتى بداية الغزو الإستعماري، حيث يوضح المؤلف كيف تمكن الغرب من السيطرة على ديار المسلمين وتفتيتها وإضعافها، وخلق هذا الكم الهائل من الفرق التي لا تخدم إلا فكر أعداء الإسلام والمسلمين.
