الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا الآن، والذي أضفنا إلى هذه الطبعة المنقحة نتائج دراستين ميدانيتين حديثتين قمنا بهما، إحداهما عن تكنولوجيا الراديو والإذاعات التقليدية، والأخرى عن شبكات التواصل الاجتماعي. وهذا الكتاب يعرض لهذا العلم الجديد، علم الاجتماع الإعلامي الذي وضعنا قواعده سنة 1984م، بوصفه فرعًا من فروع علم الاجتماع، لذلك خصصنا الفصل الأول منه للحديث عن علم الاجتماع وفروعه، ثم تناولنا في الفصل الثاني الدراسة الاجتماعية لوسائل الإعلام مع التركيز على وسائل الإعلام في الدول النامية وخاصة التليفزيون، حيث خصصنا مبحثًا مستقلًا للحديث عن التليفزيون المصري، والذي يحتاج لوقفة متأنية في دراسة مستقلة بعد انتشار الفضائيات التي سحبت البساط من تحته ومن تحت تليفزيونات قومية في دول أخرى شقيقة، حيث كان رد بعض أبناء هذه الدول علينا عند السؤال عن مشاهدة التليفزيون لديهم يأتينا في شكل تساؤل تعجبي: وهل ما زال موجودًا؟! فقد دخلت الفضائيات حياتنا، وأيضًا الحاسب الآلي، والانترنت الذي يسمح لنا بمشاهدة القنوات الفضائية والاستماع لإذاعات من دول بعيدة عنا وبدون طبق لاقط، وبجودة عالية وبدون تشويش. كذلك ثبت دور وسائل الاتصال الاجتماعي وبخاصة الفيس بوك وتويتر في التغير الاجتماعي الذي لمسناه في ثورة 25 يناير باتصال الشباب ببعضهم عن طريقها، وهو ما نتناوله من خلال الفصل الثالث الدور الوظيفي للدش والانترنت، أما الفصل الرابع والأخير فيتناول التليفزيون من منظور اجتماعي.
