الغاية من وضع هذا الكتاب هي إعادة النظر في الذي بين أيدينا من معرفة عن حياة صلاح الدين، والإضافة إلى تلك المعرفة، حيث يمكن ذلك. وكل ذلك يرمي إلى توضيح الإطار الذي وضع فيه مترجموه صلاح الدين المحدثون أحكامهم وخلاصات آرائهم. ومن أجل تحقيق هذا الغرض فإن الاهتمام يتركز على المصادر المعاصرة للفترة، وبشكل خاص على المراسلات الموجودة، السياسي منها والخاص.
وهذا لن يزيد معرفتنا عن توصل صلاح الدين إلى السلطة في مصر، أو عن تاريخ الحملة الصليبية الثالثة، إلا قليلاً، إلا أنه ذو قيمة خاصة للفترة الرئيسية لحياته. فالمصادر تعني أصلاً بالأعمال التي قام بها صلاح الدين بالذات وبتفسير هذه الأعمال، إلا أن هذه بدورها تعكس الإطار الأهم للقوة الفعالة في عصره.
هذا العمل الضخم الذي وضعه المؤرخان البريطانيان ملكوم ليزنز ود.جاكسون يطال جوانب ظلت غير معروفة حتى الآن من حياة صلاح الدين الأيوبي وجهاده. وقد اعتمد المؤرخان على مصادر عربية جديدة وأخرى غربية، وجاء عملهما على قدر كبير من الموضوعية.
نقل الكتاب إلى العربية الدكتور علي ماضي، الأستاذ في الجامعة اللبنانية، وراجعه المؤرخ الدكتور نقولا زيادة وأستاذ التاريخ في الجامعة اللبنانية الدكتور فهمي سعد.
