في هذه المسرحية، يقدم الكاتبان "طارق علي وتورفلد ستين" الحروب الصليبية خلفية لما يريدان طرحه ومناقشته وتحليله. فهما غير مهتمين بتصوير الحروب الصليبية وملابساتها وتفاصيلها العسكرية، بل إن كل اهتمامهما يتوجه للشخصيات الرئيسة المحركة لتلك الحروب، سواء في الجانب العربي "السلطان صلاح الدين الأيوبي، وجميلة زوجه وابن ميمون طبيبه الخاص يهودي العقيدة"، وعلى الجانب الغربي "الملك ريتشارد المعروف بقلب الأسد، وأمه إلينور والأمير فيليب الفرنسي". وعبر المسرحية يقدم الكاتبان مجموعة من المعالجات والتحليلات لخطاب تلك الشخصيات للكشف عن مكنوناته ودوافعها ومواقفها غير المعلنة، ليس فقط تجاه الآخر "العقائدي العرقي" ولكن تجاه بعضها البعض وتجاه معتقداتها الشخصية، في محاولة جادة لإعادة تقييم المواقف والمبادئ والمنطلقات والأهداف، وبإشارة ذكية يكشف الكاتبان عن جوهر هذه الحروب وهو ما يجعلها قابلة للتجدد أو للاستدعاء حتى الآن، من خلال المشهد الختامي للمسرحية: المسرح مظلم ، قبل أن تسقط الإضاءة على شاشة كتب عليها العبارة التالية : فى عام1920، بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى، تقسم جيوش الحلفاء العالم العربي بينها. وعندما دخل الجنرال الفرنسي "جورو" دمشق على رأس جيوشه، ذهب الجنرال رأسًا إلى قبر صلاح الدين، ووقف أمام القبر وقال: لقد عدنا.
