يقول الثعالبي في كتابه "لباب الأدب" واصفًا الأبطال وأبناء الحروب: "كل شجاع قد تعود الإقدام، حيث تزل الأقدام، وبطل يرى الإحجام عارًا لا تمحوه الأيام، سيفه أم الآجال، ورمحه يتم الأطفال، ما لسيفه غير الرقاب قراب، وقد ملأ الأرض دماء، والسماء هباء، حجل الخيل بدماء أعدائه، وجعل هاماتهم قلانس رماحه، رمحه الطويل يقصر آجال الرجال.
هذه الأوصاف التي ذكرها الثعالبي تنطبق على أبطال الحروب الموجودة داخل هذا الكتاب، ليس هذا فحسب، ولكن هناك ميزة لا تقل أهمية عن هذه الأوصاف، وهي حسن القيادة ورسم الخطط العسكرية.
وهذا الكتاب سجل تاريخي هام يتناول المعارك والحروب التي دارت رحاها على مدار التاريخ الإنساني منذ عام 500 قبل الميلاد إلى عام 1939 حيث الحرب العالمية الثانية. ويتناول أهم القادة العسكريين من أمثال الاسكندر الأكبر، وفيليب، هانيبال، يوليوس قيصر، جوستافوس، وكرومويل، مارلبورو، فردريك، نابليون، هتلر، وغيرهم من القادة، وكل قائد من هؤلاء القادة كانت له لمسات خاصة أضافها إلى فن القيادة ورسم الخطط. وكل هؤلاء يربطهم المكر والحيلة والبراعة، وحسن التصرف واستغلال الفرص، إلى غير ذلك من الأوصاف الموجودة داخل الكتاب.
