كتاب ابن المحسن الصابي أو تحفة الأمراء في تاريخ الوزراء يؤلف قيمة تاريخية وسياسية واجتماعية ذات أهمية خاصة سواء بالنسبة لدارسي التاريخ العربي العام أو بالنسبة للباحثين الذين يتوخون الولوج إلى صورة الأوضاع الإدارية والسياسية والاجتماعية في العصر العباسي ككل.
فرغم أن هذا الكتاب يؤرخ لفترة محدودة في عمر ذلك العصر الطويل؛ إلا أنها الفترة الأهم لأنها توفر للباحث صورة متطورة للوضع السياسي المتأزم بما ينتج عنه ويؤثر فيه من أسباب وعوامل اجتماعية وسياسية وإدارية. هذه الفترة المضطربة من تأريخ العرب السياسي والإداري كانت تمتلئ بالظواهر السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية التي نجمت عن الانفتاح الكبير على حضارات الآخرين الذي تم في العصور السابقة كلها بدءاً من عصر الخلفاء الراشدين مروراً بالعصر الأموي وانتهاءً بمطلع العصر العباسي. وقد حفل باختلاط كبير شمل الإمبراطورية العربية الإسلامية كلها. فالنزوح السكاني والثقافي إلى بغداد عاصمة الخلافة أعطى نتائجه السياسية والإدارية والاجتماعية والثقافية كاملة في ذلك العصر.
وقد وفق المصنف إلى ما سعى إليه فجاء كتابه شاملاً لعصور سبقت وللعصر الذي عاش أحداثه ووقائعه فصورها أصدق تصوير وتصدى لأسبابها وخلفياتها بالشكل الذي أعطى للعمل الإداري والسياسي صورته الحقيقية وتفسيره الصحيح ووضعه في موضعه من الإطار التنظيمي العام.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن الكتاب حمل في طياته صورة للوضع الاجتماعي الذي كان يخلفه تصرف الدولة بأموال من لا وارث له، بالإضافة إلى الرأي الفقهي في توريث ذوي الأرحام والأقربين إذ لم يكن للمتوفي عصبة. وبالإضافة إلى هذا الوجه التاريخي والسياسي والاجتماعي يقدم هذا الكتاب صورة مفصلة عن النظام الإداري الذي كان متبعاً في عصر المؤلف، فنظام الدواوين وطرق تسجيل العقارات والأموال وصرفها يطل على القارئ مدعماً بالوقائع المعاشة والتصرفات التاريخية في تطبيق بعض من وجوه هذا النظام.
