كتبت قصة راسيلاس خلال مدة أسبوع في شهر كانون الثاني، ونشرت في نيسان عام 1759 وعلى الرغم من احتواء القصة على بعض التفاصيل من روايات أبى سينيا (أثيوبية القديمة)، غلا أنها شرقية فقط بالعنوان وهي على عكس قصص ألف ليلة وليلة، والقصص الفارسية التي ظهرت باللغة الإنكليزية في وقت مبكر من بداية القرن فإن قصة راسيلاس تحاول كبح جماح الخيال بدلاً من إثارته. وباتخاذ الكاتب مكاناً شرقياً لقصته يتحرك فيه ضمن نطاق مألوف ومحصور، استطاع أن يبتكر لشخصياته مجموعة من الأساليب لتتمكن شخصياته من الدخول إلى العالم بكل بساطة.
لقد أراد "صاموئيل جونسون" في قصته هذه أن يتحدث عن العظمة بشكل عام وليس عن خصوصية العظمة للحياة الشرقية. إنه لم يصف الفرس والمصريين ولكنه وصف الإنسان بشكل عام. في الرواية نجد الإنسان يزيد من شدة شقائه في صراعه الدائم بين الأمل والواقع. وهو أيضاً ضحية العواطف الدنيئة، سواء كانت هذه العواطف فيه هو أم في الآخرين. فالعربي الذي كان يجد المسرة الكبيرة في الحديث مع بيكوا (بطلة من أبطال الرواية) انفصل عنها لأنه غير قادر على مقاومة إغراء الذهب الذي قدم إليه، والتعاسة أيضاً توجد ضمن العائلة الواحدة كنتيجة للمصادمات التي لا بد منها والنزاعات التي توجد بين أناس من أعمار مختلفة وأمزجة مختلفة.
