يعد الكاتب والصحافي الإماراتي سعيد البادي، نفسه على سفر دائم، موضحاً أن «المسألة ليست مجرد الخروج الجسدي من الحيز الذي تحيا فيه، وعبور حدود وطنك، فمجرد أن فكرك مشغول بتلك الحالة من التنقل والرغبة في الاستكشاف، فذلك سفر، لذا وأنا جالس وأنا أخاطبك حالياً أعد نفسي رحالاً»، مشيراً إلى أنه قديماً كانت للسفر سبع فوائد، أما في زماننا فقد تخطت ربما ذلك بكثير، دونماً تحديد.
يشار إلى أن البادي بدأ رحلته المهنية مع الصحافة في الإعلام العسكري، في مجلة درع الوطن، قبل أن ينضم إلى جريدة الاتحاد التي نشر فيها سلسلة طويلة من مقالاته في أدب الرحلات، وعمل مراسلاً متجولاً، وشارك في تغطية كوارث ومجاعات وحروب في مناطق مختلفة من العالم.

قدم لنا سعيد البادي في رواية "المدينة الملعونة" عملًا مبنيًا في الأساس على وقائع حقيقية لتجربة عايشها المؤلف من خلال تجاربه الشخصية خلال رحلته في عام 2005 إلى أميركا اللاتينية التي أخذته إلى البيرو وبوليفيا ومدن ومناطق منسية في ذلك الجزء من العالم الذي لا يزال مجهولًا وغامضًا بالنسبة للقارئ العربي..
تبدأ الرواية من قرية منسية على حافة العالم لنجد بعدها المؤلف يحاول اقتحام غموض عوالم الأمازون الطبيعية والبشرية، فيصفه بخيال أسطوري ولغة أدبية رشيقة.
ويحتشد النص بالحقائق العلمية والأنثروبولوجية عن منطقة حوض نهر الأمازون لكن رغم ذلك لا يمكن تصنيفه على انه عمل علمي، وفي نفس الوقت فهو وإن كان مرتكزًا على أحداث رحلة حقيقية؛ غير أنه لا ينتمي إلى أدب الرحلات، ورغم تصنيفنا له كرواية، غير أنه يشتمل أيضًا على عناصر من أنواع وفنون أدبية أخرى متعددة.
