مضيتُ في اليوم التالي أُخبر الجميع عن علي، طرقتُ أبواب الجارات واتصلت بالبعيد منهم في عدن والحديدة وتعز والخُبر «عُلا أصبحت علي»، وقضيتُ أكثر من ربع ساعة أتحدّث بالهاتف مع أم شرف في الخُبر والتي لم تشأ أن تصدق ما كانت تسمعه مني، فعقّبت على حديثي مستهزئة: - إذن عقبال ما انشوف أولاده. - سترين يا أم شرف، الزمن كفيل أن يبصرك بالحقيقة. أرد عليها بكل ثقة. بيد أن موت عبدالرحمن المفاجئ واضطرار علي للعودة إلى صنعاء، وكان لا يزال بعد بجسد الأنثى، أضاع كلامي كله وأراق ماء وجهي أمام الجميع. ففي حالته تلك، مع وجود النهدين في مكانهما، لم يكن مقبولاً أن يرتدي (الثوب) ليشارك الرجال في مجلس العزاء، ولأنه بالفعل غدا رجلاً، فلم يكن ممكناً أن يجلس وسط النساء. بقي حبيساً داخل غرف البيت.
