اختلف الباحثون وعلماء النفس فى تحديد النظرة الفلسفية عند دراسة الفروق الفردية فى البناء المعرفى والإدراكى, وقد أدى ذلك إلى اختلاف التسميات والتصورات حول الأساليب المعرفية, فضلاً عن وجود غموض ملحوظ فى مسميات ومفاهيم هذه الأساليب, لذا فقد تضمن هذا المؤلف المفاهيم المختلفة للأساليب المعلافية, وخصائصها, والأبعاد المكونة لها, بالإضافة إلى بعض ابعاد المجال الوجدانى التى تقوم بعملية الضبط لهذه الأساليب, وبالتالى توضيح ماهية الضوابط المعرفية وعلاقتها بالأساليب المعرفية, والفروق بينهما, وعلى ضوء ذلك فقد قام المؤلف بتضمين تصور نظرى يؤدى إلى الوصول إلى نسق تصنيفى لهذه الأساليب والذي بدوره يؤدى إلى تبسيط وصف السلوك, بالإضافة إلى اختزال بعض أبعاد الأساليب المعرفية نحو القلة التى تتمثل فى العوامل المشتركة أو السمات.
ويتكون الكتاب من أربعة أبواب رئيسية هى:
الباب الأول: طبيعة الأساليب المعرفية.
الباب الثانى: أبعاد الأساليب المعرفية.
الباب الثالث: بعض ابعاد المجال الوجدانى والنعرفى.
الباب الرابع: النموذج المطولار للأساليب المعرفية.
