تعد مرحلة المراهقة إحدى المراحل التي يمر بها الإنسان، وهي مرحلة تتميز بمظاهر جسمية وعقلية وإنفعالية وإجتماعية، وتتطور في هذه المرحلة النواحي العقلية المعرفية للمراهق تطوراً ينحو بها نحو التمايز والتباين توطئة لإعداد الفرد للتكيف الصحيح لبيئته المتغيرة، ولعل من أهم ما يميز هذه المرحلة ظهور القدرات التي تؤكد ليس فقط الفروق الفردية إنما تؤكد الفروق داخل الفرد الواحد.
وقد ذهب بعض علماء النفس ممن ينحون منحى التحليل النفسي إلى تأكيد أهمية الرسم، والألوان من حيث أنهما وسائل فاعلة في قياس السمات الشخصية، وعدّوا الرسم وسيلة فعالة للكشف عن المشكلات الإنفعالية وحلها، وأن الفنان يسقط على رسوماته شيئاً من سمات شخصيته وخصائصها.
والتجسيد الفني يتيح من جانب آخر للعمليات العقلية المعرفية الأخرى أن تقوم بدورها في إستقبال الرسالة الإتصالية وفي فهمها، فالأطفال عند إستماعهم أو مشاهدتهم أو قراءتهم لمضمون لفظي تسانده الألوان أو الرسومات "يتذكرون" خبرات سابقة "ويتخيلون" صوراً جديدة مركبة فيكون إدراكهم وبالتالي فهمهم أكثر دقة.
وتعد الرسومات وسيلة من الوسائل التي تدل بشكل أو بآخر على خصائص تطور النواحي العقلية والإنفعالية، والسلوكية عند المراهقين، ومدى علاقة هذا التطور بأساليبهم المعرفية.
