لما كان علم البلاغة وتوابعها من أجلّ العلوم قدراً، وأدقّها سراً، إذ به تعرف دقائق العربية وأسرارها، وتكشف عن وجوه الإعجاز في نظم القرآن أستارها، وكان القسم الثالث من "مفتاح العلوم" الذي صنفه أبو يعقوب يوسف السكاكي، وهو أعظم ما صنف فيه من الكتب المشهورة نفعاً، لكونه أحسنها ترتيباً، وأتمها تحريراً، وكثرها للأصول جمعاً، ولكنه حوى الكثير من الحشو والتطويل التعقيد، لذا فقد عمل القزويني على تجريده من ذلك الحشو والتطويل والتعقيد من خلال مختصر له يتضمن ما فيه من القواعد، ويشتمل على ما يحتاج إليه من الأمثلة والشواهد، مرتباً مادة "مفتاح العلوم" ترتيباً أقرب تناولاً من ترتيبه، من غير مبالغة في اختصار لفظه، وذلك تسهيلاً لفهمه على طالبيه، مضيفاً إلى ذلك ما عثر عليه من فوائد في بعض ما جاء في مؤلفات السابقين، وزوائد لم يظفر القزويني في كلام أحد بالتصريح بها ولا الإشارة إليها، مسمياً كتابه "تلخيص المفتاح". ولا شك أن مهمة القزويني هذه كانت صعبة للغاية ويزيد من صعوبتها ما اتسم به "مفتاح العلوم" من الصعوبة والغرابة والإيجاز الشديد، بل الغموض والتعقيد أيضاً في مواضع ليست بالقليلة في كتابه. وقد كان أن تناوله الكثيرون بالشرح، وقد فرضت تلك الشروح التي دوّنت على التلخيص على الدرس البلاغي، وارتبطت به إلى يومنا هذا، ولا يزال الدارسون يرجعون إليها لارتباطها بذلك التراث البلاغي الهام الذي تمّ الاعتناء به في هذه الطبعة حيث تمّ فيها نشر متن الكتاب (التلخيص) وإخراجه إخراجاً جيداً، كما تمّ إخراج أصله المفتاح لأبي يعقوب السكاكي، مع إخراج الإيضاح للمصنف القزويني كذلك. والتي أكملت جميعها في هذه الطبعة، بإخراج أعظم الشروح وأنفعها وأجلها (عروس الأفراح) للإمام السبكي وذلك لما اشتمل عليه من شرح وافٍ، ونكات عزيزة، ومسائل نادرة قلّ العثور عليها في كتاب غيره، فضلاً عن أنه قد جمع فأوعى، حيث أفاد في شرحه هذا من نحو من ثلاثمائة مصنف سابق عليه، وقد ضمّنه خلاصة مائة مصنف في علوم البلاغة وحدها، كما نصّ على ذلك في مقدمته.
