يتحدث الكتاب عن علاقة قيم التنوير الأوروبي بما ارتكبه الأوروبيون من جرائم ضد السكان الأصليين في أمريكا ومن تلاهم في الاحتكاك بأوروبا، ذلك أن الصورة الوردية التي يحملها كثير من الناس عن التنوير الغربي تتناقض مع ما وقع على الأرض وتكاد تنحصر في الكتب الأكاديمية والمثاليات الفكرية، وليس من الصواب أن نعتمد على النظريات المجردة في تقويم حضارة ما، إذ سنجد جميع البشر ملائكة في مثالياتهم، ولكن تطبيقهم لنظرياتهم عملياً هو الذي يوضح حقيقتهم وحقيقة أفكارهم، وقد كنا نرى أن من يجرؤ على الربط بين التنوير والجرائم التي ارتكبها أبناؤه ينحو لجعلها انحرافات طارئة عن مضمونه الخيّر الحر الديمقراطي الإنساني العلماني العقلاني العلمي، وهذا ما تحاول هذه الدراسة بيان زيفه من واقع الأحداث التاريخية الدموية التي كانت سلسلة من النتائج المترابطة والمنطقية لما سنّه التنوير والعقل الأوروبي في نهضته الحديثة وتراجع فيه عن مثالياته العامة التي فرضت المصالح عليها مساراً خاصاً من الإبادة والاستعمار والرق والاستغلال والسلب والنهب بدلاً من الحرية والإخاء والمساواة والعدالة التي أصبح لها معان خاصة بالأوروبيين وتتناقض في كثير من الأحيان مع المعاني اللغوية العامة التي تبهر أنصار التغريب، ولعل ميزة التاريخ الهندي في أمريكا أنه يوضح أثر التغيرات التي صاحبت انتقال أوروبا من العصور الوسطى التي وصفت بالظلام إلى أنوار العصر الحديث، على معاملة الآخرين، ليتبين لنا أن العلمانية والإنسانية والعقلانية والديمقراطية والحرية وغيرها من شعارات التنوير لم تقم بمحو آثار التعصب الديني في العصور الوسطى بل وضعت له أساساً أكثر رسوخاً وضماناً للحفاظ على المصالح الأوروبية العدوانية بعدما سار الإيمان بالكتب المقدسة في طريق التلاشي، وهذا التجديد هو الذي حدد مكانة الآخرين السلبية في مشروع الحضارة الغربية بما يتناقض مع سعيهم المستمر للانضمام إلى جنتها الحصرية دون أن ينجح الغالبية العظمى منهم في ذلك حتى اليوم لأنهم لم يدركوا حدود رغبتها النظرية والعملية في ضم الغرباء إلى دائرتها التي انطبقت عليها الشعارات الإيجابية ولكنها بالتأكيد لم تنطبق على خارجها.
