هذا الكتاب هو محاولة أولية للبحث في موضوع شائك ومهم وهو علاقة الرقص القادم من الشرق على نظرة الغرب للشرق ونظرة الغرب لنفسه.فكتابنا الجديد يتحث عن تاريخ الرقص الشرقي الذي شكل منذ حملة نابليون وما تلا ذلك من الهوس والولع الذى أصاب الكتاب والرحالة بالراقصات إطارا معرفيا للتفاعل الثقافى بين الشرق والغرب على مستوى الأدب والفن التشكيلي والفوتغرافيا وفنون الأداء، وحتى يومنا هذا أستمر هذا الأثر على وسائل الأتصال الثقافى والمعرفى المختلفة ،يكفى أن ترى الراقصة بشكلها المميز وزيها الشهير حتى تتداعى فى ذهنك سلسلة من الصور النمطية تصف ألف ليلة وليلة والحريم ،فالرقص الشرقى وإن لم يخلق حالة إيجابية من الفهم نظراً لطبيعته المرفوضة من الشرقيين والغربيين على حد سواء رغم ولعهم به كان مصداقاً لمقولة إدوارد سعيد "إن احدى إنجازات الإمبريالية أنها قربت بين أجزاء العالم وأنه لينبغى على معظمنا الآن ... أن يعتبروا التجربة التاريخية الإمبريالية تجربة مشتركة " ،ربما كان الولع بالرقص الشرقى واحتقاره فى نفس الوقت أحد أكثر الأمثلة وضوحاً على هذه التجربة.
