يمكن اعتبار كتاب (خلاصة تاريخ العراق) لمؤلفه الأب أنستاس ماري الكرملي من كنوز التراث العربي، ذلك أن مؤلفه كتبه بعد الإحتلال الإنكليزي مباشرة واستخلص مواده من نحو ستين مصنفا بين عربي وفرنسي وانكليزي وتركي ولاتيني، واتمه كما يقول في نحو ثلاثة أشهر. وكان ذلك في العام 1918م. وفي هذا الكتاب، يقف المؤلف على ديار العراق والجزيرة قبل الإسلام متحدثا عن الأراضي والأنهار والأقوام التي سكنت أرض العراق والعمران والمدن والحضارات التي مرت في تاريخه الطويل وحتى قيام الحرب العالمية الأولى في العام 1914م في بدايات القرن العشرين.
يقسم الكتاب إلى جزئين جاء (الجزء الأول) بعنوان: في الجزيرة القديمة قبل الإسلام. ويتألف من: أحوال المدالث الفراتية الجغرافية ومقابلتها بمدالث مصر وبنجاب (العمران النهري – سرجون ألحد – الأنهر والمدن) ويعني المؤلف بـالمدالث: مواقع سيل الأنهار. أما (الجزء الثاني) فجاء بعنوان: الجزيرة في عهد الإسلام ويتألف من أ- الفتوحات الإسلامية – انبعاث الجزيرة – سطوة الأمويين – وأعمال العباسيين. و ب – في العرب وفي مزاياهم الخاصة بهم – وفي أقسام العرب المختلفة من بادية ومتحضرة وفي أقسام القبائل من قديمة وحديثة مع ذكر منازلهم.
