فيليني هو فيليني طفلاً كبيراً مغامراً, جسوراً مشاكساً, ينتمي إلى مدرسته الخاصة, يكتشف الحياة بعدسة الكاميرا, ويثير الأسئلة الصعبة, وهو في كتابه هذا يكشف عن نفسه, يعترف, يحكي بصراحة عن تجربة غنية في عالم السينما لمخرج اسمه فيليني. إن السيرة الذاتية للبطل الفيلليني التي يستعيدها المخرج, في كل مرة منذ البداية- هي أكثر أنموذجية من سيرة حياته الخاصة. لأن الشاب يغادر الريف, يذهب إلى روما وينتقل إلى الجهة الأخرى من الشاشة, يصنع السينما, ويصيح هو نفسه سينما. إن فيلم فيلليني هو سينما معكوسة, جهاز عرض يلتهم الصالة, وكاميرا تدير ظهرها إلى البلاتو, وهذان القطبان يظلان يتبادلان التبعية, فالريف يكتسب معنى واقع استحضاره بدءاً من روما, وروما تكتسب معنى وصول المرء إليها قادماً من الريف, وبين البشاعات الإنسانية للريف ولمدينة روما. ويهدف عمل فيلليني إلى لإبراز وتصنيف هذه الأسطورة المختلجة.
