يبحث هذا الكتاب في ثلاث مواضيع رئيسية هي النظرية العسكرية والمذهب العسكري والعقيدة العسكرية.
جاء موضوع النظرية العسكرية كمحاولة لشرح ما تعنيه النظرية كمفهوم عام وكمفهوم عسكري وتطورها التاريخي، وصولاً إلى تعريفها بوصفها جزء من العلم العسكري وبوصفها نظام فكري إستباقي لمجموعة من المفاهيم والتعريفات والإفتراضات التي تعطينا نظرة منظمة لفكرة معينة أو ظاهرة معينة للعديد من المواضيع المتعلقة بفن الحرب، في مجالاته السوقية (الإستراتيجية) والعملياتية والتعبوية (التكتيكية).
أما المذهب العسكري فهناك إختلافات في تعريفه ومفهومه، والسبب متأتي من الترجمة من الإنكليزية إلى العربية لان مصطلح العقيدة العسكرية (Military Doctrine) تُرجم إلى عقيدة عسكرية في بعض الأحيان، وتُرجم في أحيان أخرى إلى مذهب عسكري.
وهكذا أصبح القارئ والباحث يجد نفسه في حيرة بين هذين المصطلحين، علماً أن مصطلح مذهب في اللغة العربية يعني مجموعة من الآراء والنظريات العلمية والفلسفية إرتبط بعضها ببعض ما يجعلها وحدة منسقة، والجمع مذاهب والمذهب في اللغة: طريقة، قصد، رأي، وجهة نظر، والمذهب هو جزء من العقيدة.
لذلك يمكن القول بأن المذهب العسكري من وجهة نظرنا هو غير العقيدة العسكرية، والمذهب العسكري يصبح بمثابة الطريقة أو الأسلوب الذي تقاتل بموجبه القوات المسلحة بصنوفها المختلفة في الحرب في مختلف الظروف والأحوال، إستناداً إلى العقيدة العسكرية، ويصبح المذهب العسكري بمثابة العقيدة القتالية التي تجيب عن السؤال... (كيف نقاتل).
أما العقيدة العسكرية: فهي مجموعة وجهات النظر والأفكار العلمية والفلسفية والنظرية التي تتبناها الدولة للتعبير عن فكرها وأهدافها السياسية ووجهة نظرها في كل ما له علاقة بفلسفة الحرب وبالحرب التي يحتمل أن تخوضها، وهي معبرة عن النظرة المستقبلية لما ينبغي أن يكون عليه أمنها الوطني، وهي تحدد بشكل واضح كل ما ي تعلق بأعداد الدولة للحرب، كما تحدد المبادئ العامة للعقيدة القتالية في جانبيها العملياتي والتعبوي (التكتيكي)، إنها التعبير العملي للفكر والأهداف السياسية للدولة في المجال العسكري.
هنالك علاقة وترابط وثيق بين النظرية العسكرية والمذهب العسكري والعقيدة العسكرية، فالعقيدة العسكرية، وبسبب موقعها ومفهومها الذي يترجم وجهة نظر الدولة السياسية / العسكرية في الحرب، تكون هي القادرة على الإجابة على سؤالين وهما... (لماذا نحارب) و(متى نحارب)، أما المذهب العسكري (العقيدة القتالية) فعليه الإجابة على السؤال المهم وهو (كيف نقاتل أو كيف نحارب).
هذا الجواب يكون من خلال تطبيق نظريات عسكرية في ميادين المعركة سواء على المستوى السوقي (الإستراتيجي) أو العملياتي أو التعبيري (التكتيكي)، وحتى تكون الصورة متكاملة قمنا بعرض التطورات التي حصلت على النظريات العسكرية ضمن إطار فن الحرب عبر المراحل التاريخية القديمة (قبل الميلاد) وما بعده وصولاً إلى عصرنا الراهن.
