لا نسعى في هذا الكتاب للتقليل من قيمة جبران جليل جبران الأدبية أو التشكيلية، بل نعمل لنقل الواقع الذي كان عليه جبران بعيداً عن القداسة التي نسجها جبران حول اسمه وجذوره وفنه الإبداعي.
نجح جبران إلى حدٍّ بعيد في بلوغ هدفه، ألا وهو تكريس صورة النبوة في شخصيته، وهو بذلك تخطى المتنبي الذي يقال إنه جاهر بفكرته حينما ادعى النبوة.
قد يقول قائل إن حشد الكثير من التهم ضد مبدع لبناني عربي مثل جبران، ناله ما ناله من المجد في العالم، هو جلد للذات، وتشويش على المكرّس، وذلك لغايات إستعراضية وربما تسويقية.
كنا لنسلّم جدلاً بذلك لولا إطمئناننا إلى متانة مكانة جبران، مستندين بذلك إلى نماذج سابقة أطلت بالنقد على الإنتاج الجبراني نصاً ورسماً، وأيضاً على حياته الخاصة، دون أن يساهم ذلك في قلب المعطيات المتعارف عليها، علماً أن جلَّ تلك الإصدارات والمقالات صيغت بأقلام رصينة ومثقفة.
من ناحية أخرى، يدهشنا أن الديمقراطيين، أصحاب نظرية الرأي والرأي الآخر، يصلون عند أسماء معينة ويتحولون إلى الديكتاتورية المزخرفة بالتبريرات، فهؤلاء أيضاً مطالبون بالتدقيق والتمحيص والمقارنة، خاصة أن التقنية الحديثة قلصت المساحة بين إبداعات الشرق والغرب وكشفت المستور والمنتحل صار بمتناول الأيدي.
