Book Description

Author of the international bestseller The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran and his work remain influential to this day. President John F. Kennedy famously quoted from this book: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country".

With a simplicity akin to that of Gibran's own writing, Alexandre Najjar retraces Gibran's life, from humble beginnings in Lebanon to his artistic training in Paris and meteoric rise to fame in the US, his adopted home.

Najjar examines Gibran's letters, his publisher's archives and unpublished documents, revealing the extent of his influence and the extraordinary message of peace and hope in all of his work.

This study seeks to address the impact of the phenomenon known as "globalization" on the Arabic language and the culture it embodies. The following pages will explore the development of the Arabic language and its changing patterns, and identity specific mechanisms through which linguistic accommodations have been (and are being) made in the Arabic language to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Also discussed are the views of Arab intellectuals on the introduction of Western- primarily American- products, economic patterns, political ideas and social values into the Arab world and on the extent to which this Western influx affects Arabic culture and society.

As with any other tongue, the Arabic language influences the way Arabic speakers see, judge and relate to the world. It affects the very nature of their perceptions and judgments, and hence constitutes an integral part of a person's character and identity as an individual and more, importantly, as a member of a group and a society. Language embodies and mirrors the historical and religious experiences of nation's identity. Languages reflect, indeed measure, the strengths and weaknesses of civilizations as they embody the progress, the innovations and the coherence of these civilizations.
