بلغت الخنساء أقصى مراتب الشُّهْرة برثائها الحزين ونشيجها المؤلم ولوعتها التي لا تنقضي، وجالت في أعماق النفس تجتلي الضعف الإنساني أمام الموت الهائل، مستسلمة حيناً، ورافضة في أكثر الأحيان، تُمجِّد القوّة والنَّصر، وتبتغي الحياة فلا تَلْقَى إلاّ دَمَاراً وهلاكاً ومَوْتاً زؤاماً.
وقد ملأت الدُّنيا إنتحاباً ودُمُوعاً وعويلاً، وحَفَرت أشعارها حَفْراً في قلب كُلّ موتور حزين، وعبّرت بأشعارها الرقيقة أصدق تعبير عن مرارة الثّكل، وألم الموت، وصوّرت التجربة الإنسانية المؤلمة أدقّ تصوير، فكان شعرها خالداً نحسّه، وتتجاوب معه، وننفعل معه.
وقد أولى الرُّواة شعر الخنساء ما يستحقُّه من العناية، وشرحه الكثير، ومنهم ثَغْلب، أبو العباس، أحمد بن يحيى بن سيار الشيباني النحوي (ت 291هــ): إمام الكوفيين في النحو واللغة في زمانه، وقد شرح ثعلب "ديوان الخنساء" وكَتَبه بخطِّه، لكن هذه النسخة ضاعت وبقيت نُسَخٌ أخرى منقولة عنها.
حيث أفاد ثعلب في شرحه من أكثر الشروح السابقة لديوان الخنساء، كشرح أبي عمرو بن العلاء، وأبي عمرو الشيباني، وأبي عبيدة، والأصمعي، وابن الأعرابي، وابن السكيت، وأفاد من رواة بني سليم كعَرَّام السُّلمي وابن أقيصر وشجاع وعياش، ورواة سلميين آخرين من الأعراب لم يذكر أسماءهم مكان منهجه في شرح شعر الخنساء يعتمد على ذكر الروايات المختلفة، وشروح العلماء قبله، وغالباً ما يذكر أكثر من وجه واحد في معنى الكلمة أو بيت الشعر، وبعد أن يذكر آراء العلماء قبله يثبت رأيه معتمداً على محفوظه من اللغة، ويهتم إهتماماً مميزاً بشروح "السُّلميين" ورواياتهم لشعر الخنساء.
ولأهمية "ديوان الخنساء"، اعتنى بتحقيقه الدكتور "أنور أبو سويلم" وعمل على إخراجه بحلّة جديدة وقشيبة معتمداً على شرح ثعلب أبو العباس النحوي.
