يمكننا أن نبلور تطور البناء الفنى فى المسرح المصرى الحديث فى مراحل متتالية هى على النحو التالى: المسرح الميلودرامى، المسرحية الدرامية وتشمل: الدراما الذهنية، الدراما الواقعية الاجتماعية، الدراما الواقعية الانتقادية، الدراما الواقعية السياسية، الدراما الشعرية، ما بعد الدراما ويشمل المسرح التعبيرى والمسرح التسجيلى والمسرح التجريبى.
وتسعى هذه الدراسة إلى تتبع مراحل هذا التطور وخصائص المسرحية فى كل مرحلة وذلك من خلال التركيز على مسائل الشكل والبناء وهى مسائل تكاد أن تكون متجاهلة تماماً من سائر الدراسات النقدية والأدبية الخاصة بالمسرح عندنا، والدراسة التى سأقدمها هنا دراسة تقوم على الأحكام التى يجرى توضيحها من خلال النصوص.
وربما كان هذا النقد التطبيقى الفنى جديداً على حقل دراستنا الأدبية والنقدية بالنسبة للمسرح بوجه خاص، فقد شهد الشعر كما شهدت القصة من قبل عدداً من هذه الدراسات الفنية التطبيقية، أما المسرح، فربما كانت دراستى هذه من الدراسات الأولى التى تحاول من خلال النصوص تتبع مراحل التطور الفنى وخصائصه فى مسرحنا الحديث.
