يحاول هذا البحث أن يدرس إتجاهات الرواية العربية المعاصرة من خلال طرح لمصطلحات تحاول أن تعطي دلالة واضحة للمواقف المطروحة في الرواية العربية المعاصرة من خلال تشكيلاتها البنائية: أي أن هذا البحث يجتهد في تصنيف الرواية العربية المعاصرة إلى إتجاهات ترى المضمون من خلال الأداة والأداة صورة للمضمون.
بدأت الدراسة بباب تمهيدي يحاول أن يضع أمام القارئ تصورا واضح الأبعاد لنشأة وتطور الرواية في الأدب العربي الحديث من خلال التعرف على المحاولات التجربية الأولى في التأليف والتعريب والترجمة، والتعرف على البدايات الرائدة.
ثم التعرف على الرواية الإجتماعية كمرحلة تمهيدية للرواية الواقعية التي إعتبرها البحث بداية الإتجاهات الروائية المعاصرة. ولقد رأي البحث في الرواية الواقعية هذه البداية لما كان يعني تبلورها على هذا النحو، من تغير في الذوق الأدبي وفي يالتعبير كذلك، حيث الأداء والتذوق في ظل هذه الرواية إلى تقبل الرؤية ذات الأبعاد.
وقد رأي البحث من خلال رصده للرواية العربية الواقعية، إتجاهين متمايزين هما الواقعية التسجيلية والواقعية التحليلية. فتناول تحديد المصطلحات النقدية وربطها بالمؤثرات الحضارية من ناحية، وبالتأثيرات الأجنبية من ناحية أخرى، ثم حاول دراسة ملامح الإتجاة من خلال بعض النماذج الروائية التي يمكن أن تمثله.
أما الباب الثالث والأخير في هذه الدراسة، فقد تناول الرواية الجديدة وهي تلك الرواية التي تأثرت أكثر بفلسفات وأفكار العالم المعاصر.
