اختلفت آراء الدارسين حول أول محاولة قصصية ظهرت في الأدب الجزائري الحديث، فقد ذهب الدكتور عبد الملك مرتاض إلى أن قصة المساواة- فرانسوا والرشيد" التي نشرت في العدد الثاني من جريدة"الجزائر"، في يوم الإثنين 20 محرم 1344 هـ الموافق لـ 10 أوت 1925 هي أول قصة جزائرية وقد أكد ذلك بقوله"إن أول محاولة قصصية عرفها النثر الحديث في الجزائر، تلك القصة المثيرة التي نشرت في جريدة الجزائر.
