تضم مجموعة الحيوانات اللافقرية أكثر من مليون ونصف مليون نوع، وغالبية هذه الحيوانات حرة المعيشة تقطن البيئات، البرية والمائية والهوائية، إلا أن البعض منها تعيش معيشة طفيلية، ولدراسة أي منها لا بد من التعرف عليه، وتشخيصها وتسميتها.
وما زالت البيئة في العراق تفتقر إلى الكثير من العمل للتعرف على الحيوانات فيها، وهذا يتطلب توفر كافة المراجع المنشورة حول تصنيف أي منها، فضلاً عن مقارنة النماذج مع نماذج مودعة في المتاحف العالمية، وهذا عمل يتطلب الكثير من الجهد والعناء، مما حدى ببعض العلماء في الخارج إلى التفكير في حصر البحوث المنشورة حول مجموعة ما ووضع مفاتيح حديثة لتشخيص أنواعها، خصوصاً تلك التي قام بها Prof H. J. Dumont & Prof. T.Nogrady، إذ كلفا متخصصين في مجاميع معينة من لافقاريات المياه العذبة في العالم لوضع مفاتيح حديثة للأنواع التي تنضوي تحتها وما زال العمل حثيثاً بغية بلوغ الهدف، والتي نشرتها دار Backuys Publishing Comp.
ونحن في جامعة البصرة قد عقدنا العزم بالعمل على مجموعة مهمة من مجاميع اللافقاريات وهي شعبة الدولابيات Phylum Rotifera أو الحيوانات الدوارة Rotatoria، فالبرغم من وجود عدد من القوائم بأنواع الدولابيات في أنهار العراق إلا أنها تفتقر في كثير من الأحيان إلى التأكد Confirmation من تصنيفها، إذ أنها اعتمدت على مصادر قديمة فضلاً عن أن تلك المصادر لا تمت لمنطقتنا بصلة مثل الأنواع الأوروبية أو الأمريكية الشمالية، فمع وجود أنواع ذات توزيع عالمي توجد أنواع اخرى توزيعها محدود في أماكن معينة.
