هذا الكتاب، رسالة قصيرة، تحكي قصة عالم، استطاع أن يكون على تأخر زمانه، وضعف الأمة في عصره، مثالاً لما يمكن أن يكون عليه المسلم في كل زمان، ومكان... وهذه الرسالة: هي ترجمة لحياة الشيخ بدر الدين الحسني، خطتها يراع تلميذه الشيخ محمود رشيد العطار، بطلب من الاستاذ الأديب أحمد تيمور باشا؛ حيث استطاع المؤلف أن يلقي الضوء على جوانب من حياة الشيخ، وما اتصف به من سعةٍ في العلم، وهمة في ابتدأ الشيخ العطار رسالته بالتعريف بنسب الشيخ الحسني، والترجمة لوالديه ونشأته ومسيرته العلمية ومؤلفاته وعلومه ودروسه ومكانته العلمية عند علماء عصره، واهتمام الملوك والأمراء به، وختم الشيخ العطار رسالته بالفرس الكبير الذي جناه الشيخ الحسني من تلامذة كبار، وعلماء أفذاذ، تابعوا المسيرة بعد موته وساروا على نهجه.
تأتي أهمية هذه الرسالة من كونها ألفت في حياة الشيخ الحسني وقبل مماته، فهي اصل لكل ترجمة جاءت بعدها، كذلك تكتسب هذه الرسالة أهميتها من كون السيخ العطار لازم المترجم –الحسني- مدة تزيد على أربعين عاماً، فهو اخص تلامذته، ويعرف عنه ما لا يعرفه غيره.
وعن عملها في تحقيق النسخة الخطية لهذه الرسالة ومنهاج تحقيقاتها سلكت المحققة "اسماء بنت عبده كوشك" المنهج التالي: "نسخت المخطوط، وقابلته بالأصل، فصلت النص، ورقمته، جعلت لكل فقرة عنواناً مستقلاً...، وشرحت بعض الألفاظ الغريبة، وعرَفت بمعظم الأعلام الواردة لتكون معروفة عند طلاب العلم، استدركت النقص الحاصل في المخطوط، ونبهت عليه، ووضعت لهذا الكتاب عنواناً هو: "الدَرر البهية في اخبار محدث الديار الشامية"، إذ لم يضع له صاحب الرسالة عنواناً، وترجمت للمصنف ترجمة موجزة، وضعت فهارس للرسالة".
