السيرة في هذا الكتاب هي قبس من حياة سحنون، الفقيه المالكي المذهب، المدني المشرب، هي سيرة قاضٍ، وسيرة عالم، وسيرة عابد، شبحه مقيم في المغرب، وروحه معتكف في الحجاز. وهي قصة في سيرة، وهي رسم في لوحة، وعبرة في كتاب،وحكمة أخذت من محكمة، في صرامة حاكم، وهيبة قاضٍ، وزهد عابد... قصة كساها العدل هيبة، والحق سلطاناً قاضٍ يهابه الناس، ولا يهاب إلاّ الله، لا يخاف فيه لريه لائم، الضعيف عنده قوي، والقوي عنده ضعيف، حتى بديل لأحدهم الآخر، فإذا هم سواء كأسنان المشط، تبرز هذه السيرة علماً من أعلام السلف، وقاضياً من قضاة الشرع، ومربياً يربي بحاله وماله، هو مثل من المثل العليا يجب أن يجتذبها معلمو عصرنا ومتعلموه. وصاحب السيرة هو عبد الله بن سعيد بن حبيب التنوخي، من حمص أصله، نزل والده القيروان مع من نزلها من العرب الأقحام الذين هاجروا من المشرق العربي، مولده في القيروان، ولقب بسحنون على اسم طائر حديد النظر معروف لدى أهل المغرب.
