حقق السلطان سليم نصر مؤزرا ضد الجيش الصفوي في موقعة جالديران عام 1514، ومحا الشاه إسماعيل من صفحات التاريخ، وهكذا لم يبق في الدولة أي تمرد أو فوضى، وحافظ السلطان بشكل دائم على وحدة الأناضول وسط أجواء من الأمن والطمأنينة.
بسط السلطان سيطرته على قلعة ديار بكر، وألحق ولايات جنوب شرق الأناضول بالدولة العثمانية، كما فتح البلاد العربية، وضم حلب والشام، وزار المسجد الأقصى.
عبرت الجيوش العثمانية الصحاري في رحلة شديدة الصعوبة، لنفتح مصر، فشهدت مدينتا القاهرة والإسكندرية الإحتفالات على مدار ثلاثة أيام بلياليها، وحُلت مشاكل الشعب المصري.
وكان رد السلطان سليم على من قالوا له: "لقد ضممتم مصر كذلك إلى ملككم" كالتالي: "إن الملك إلا الله، فمن يستكبر ويزيد ظلمه عندما ينتصر فإن الله تعالى يهوي به إلى أسفل سافلين، فإذا كان الأمر كذلك، هل يتكبر الإنسان؟ فلو قلت أنا أو أي شخص آخر أن لي قطعة أرض بقدر عقلة الإصبع، ألا يكون ذلك إدعاء لمشاركة الله في ملكه؟ ولهذا، ليس هناك ما نفعله أمام عظمته سبحانه وتعالى سوى أن نسجد له".
ذهب السلطان سليم إلى مسجد المؤيد لأداة صلاة الجمعة، وبينما الخطيب يقرأ الخطبة بإسمه مدح السلطان قائلاً "حاكم الحرمين الشريفين"، فقاطعه السلطان مطالباً إياه بتعديل اللقب إلى "خادم الحرمين الشريفين".
ولأن الخلافة انتقلت إلى الدولة العثمانية عقب فتح مصر، فقد أرسل شريف مكة مفاتيح مكة والمدينة والأمانات المقدسة إلى السلطان سليم.
وعندما توفي السلطان سليم يوم 22 سبتمبر / أيلول 1520 بسبب دمّل يقال له الجمرة الخبيثة ترك لإبنه السلطان سليمان القانوني دولة انتهت بها الصراعات الداخلية وجيشاً قوياً وخزينة مملوءة.
